Summer

Summer in Florida means high heat and heavy rain. Make sure your irrigation system is working properly and your sprinklers are turned off during sufficient rainfall. If you can stand the heat, this is the perfect time for planting and transplanting. Summer months are the best to plant palm trees. This will give them enough time to establish before any cold snaps. Plant the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil. Plant and fertilize trees, palms, shrubs, perennials, and annuals this time of the year. Do not plant too deeply and make sure to provide sufficient water until the plant has adapted to its new surroundings. Late July/ August is the time to prepare the soil in your vegetable garden by solarization. This practice means using the sun’s heat to sterilize the soil. Clear out plants, debris, and weeds from the garden bed. Moisten the soil and cover with plastic which conducts the heat into the topsoil. The heat builds up and kills insects and diseases. This will ensure your garden bed is ready to plant vegetables next season.

Fall

Fall is typically the time that Florida transitions from rainy season to drier months. As the weather gets cooler, make sure to reduce watering frequency. Plant and fertilize annuals and perennials at this time. planting annuals and bulbs that do better in cooler weather will add a pop of color and provide food for migrating birds. Fall is also a great time to plant many herbs and vegetables that will grow and produce food during the coming months. This is also the perfect time to plant strawberries. Make sure to monitor your vegetable garden and control weeds by applying a pre-emergent herbicide.

Winter

The winter months in Florida are typically dry so make sure to water newly installed plants and flowers. Prepare your flower bed and trees for the cold weather by adding mulch. mulch will keep heat in and help with moisture retention. However, When the temperature drops, make sure to bring vulnerable plants inside or cover with sheets. Winer is a great time to maintain trees and shrubs with selective pruning. Trimming any unhealthy areas will help the healthy part of the tree to thrive. Many vegetables and cold-tolerant annuals can be planted at this time.

Spring

Spring is the perfect season to be outdoor and working in your garden. This is also when you should make sure your sprinkler system is functioning properly and adjust the spray coverage accordingly. Now is the time to prune any damaged plants in your landscape, remove weeds, fertilize as needed, and re-mulch. After these steps are complete, you can start planning for new plants. Consider adding a pollinator area in your garden which helps attracts bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies. Also, consider where you will be planting flowers and trees since some thrive in the full shade while others require more shade. Spring is the perfect time to plant your vegetable garden, shrubs, and warm weather annuals.
